Submitted Apr 22, 2008 at 17:16 Memorial Services for Rochelle E. Miller
Dear Friends,
There will be Memorial Services for Rochelle Miller in Peacham on Friday, May 30th, 2008. Rochelle was Frank Miller's fiancιe who tragically passed away while visiting Peacham in March. Frank & Rochelle were to be married on May 31st and planned to relocate permanently to their home in South Peacham in the near future. It is appropriate that Rochelle's final resting place should be in this place and among those she had come to love.
10:00 AM -- Interment in Peacham Cemetery Family and friends are welcome
5:30 PM -- Gathering and a communal meal in the social hall at the Peacham Congregational Church
6:30 PM -- Memorial service in the Peacham Congregational Church sanctuary followed by a concert with Nightingale All are welcome
There will be a memorial walk in Peacham starting at 9 AM on Saturday, May 31st. Rochelle loved to walk along the highways and byways of Peacham. This 5 kilometer (3 mile) walk will start by the Soldier's Monument. Please join us as we stroll along some of Rochelle's favorite pathways.
This will be a joyful celebration of Rochelle's life and all she knew and loved. All are invited to attend. [from Jean D]
Submitted Apr 19, 2008 at 17:35 The strict parking ban has been lifted from the lot behind my place, but at least four spaces belong to residents. Fortunately school is out for the week, so there should be plenty of parking in the lot across the street. See you Wednesday!
Submitted Mar 24, 2008 at 23:54 Anyone want to host music on Wednesday 3/26?
Submitted Mar 17, 2008 at 06:33 Kenric lives at 171 Main Street in Montpelier, Apt. 1. It is a 3-story mustard yellow Victorian with green trim directly across the street from Main Street Middle School. If you enter the driveway to the right and proceed past the front porch, you'll see a smaller porch on the side with a railing, where Kenric's door can be accessed. his name should be clearly marked on mailbox.
The catch is that there is no parking for guests in the lot behind the building or in the driveway. We can come in and unload but park elsewhere. If there are not a lot of cars at the school we can park in that lot. Otherwise there is the street in front and nearby streets.

Submitted Jan 04, 2008 at 16:05 The NIPs have gigs! We've got the Jan. 12 Worcester dance (7-9 at the school), then we've got the Craftsbury Sport Center series coming up on Jan. 16, Jan. 23, and Feb. 6. They'd like to start the dancing at 7:15 (earlier than other years). Start thinking about whether you want to catch a meal before the dance so they can plan on the portions needed.
Submitted Dec 03, 2007 at 21:18 Sounds like Andy and Janet are interested in having music Dec. 12 and Lois wants it Dec. 19---
Submitted Nov 13, 2007 at 03:32 Worcester dance series off to a modest but enthusiastic start: Saturday Nov. 10, Andy, two Johns, Charlene, Fran, and Chip put out a smooth blend of the usual tunes for a small but highly motivated group of dancers, most of whom came as family groups. All who attended felt it was really fun and there were lots of offers to try to persuade more to come next time.

Submitted Sep 07, 2007 at 08:04 On October 3rd, 2007 the NIP's are invited to have their potluck supper at Dave & Ann's in Craftsbury, then head over to the Highland Lodge in Greensboro to play music. Dennis White and I will be there with a small hiking tour and it will be my only chance to play with NIPs in 5 weeks.
Submitted Jul 31, 2007 at 08:10 The Parsnips will be playing at the Autumn on the Green in Danville on Sunday, October 7, at 2:30. It would be good for folks to be there by 2:15 if possible--thanks

Submitted Jun 30, 2007 at 08:31 It's a big weekend for things to do--
On Saturday 6/30, the fun will begin at Melody Hill Farm, with Eric Brinkerhof and his wife Pam about 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. or so. There will be several groups playing. The Nips will have a 30-minute slot to play probably at 3 or 3:30, if they'd like.
At 5 p.m. the group adjourns to the Brinkerhoffs' home on Brook Road near Morse's Mill on the Joe's Brook Road, Danville for a potluck supper and more music "until people can't stand it any more", Eric says--they have had this sort of party before. People can camp out there for the night , at the Melody Hill Farm buildings, on Lois's lawn or at the Hayfield Junket site across from the public beach at Harvey's Lake.
The next day, July 1, the annual Hayfield Junket takes place at Lois's meadow across from the entrance to the Harvey's Lake swimming area in West Barnet. The hayfield junket always attracts many present and past NIPs and is a great occasion for relaxing, playing music, sharing good food, and connecting with other NIPs.
The June 23 Carolan Festival was a marvelous gem of a mini-festival--great music, very congenial atmosphere, and a wonderful potluck banquet. About 70 people attended, at least 30 of whom shared music. Many took pictures and there's a good chance that we'll have a decent video of the whole event -- for a peek at a few of the images, go to nipsmusic.net/carolan. Thanks to John, Fran, and Elizabeth for creating this magical event.
Submitted Jun 17, 2007 at 13:25 Music at John and Fran's June 20th will be a chance to go over music and other aspects of the Carolan festival on Saturday--and as long as we're going to try to get lots of people there Wednesday, we might as well consider that a kind of party, too!
Submitted Jun 14, 2007 at 23:27 REMINDER: Lois' hayfield junket is July 1st! Save the date!
Submitted Jun 12, 2007 at 20:57 From Tom; Come to Tom & Charlotte's house on July 4th at 4:00 PM to play music and celebrate Tom's 60th birthday. Drinks, kabobs and birthday cake will be provided. Side dishes appreciated. Of course, bring instruments. If you have portable chairs, bring them along. Also bring comfortable walking shoes and headlamp or flashlight if you want to walk 1/2 mile up the hill to watch the fireworks at dusk. Call 253-4792 if you need directions or have any questions. RSVP by phone or email by July 1 would be helpful.
Submitted Jun 02, 2007 at 20:39 From Elizabeth about the setup at the "white school" -- There is a sink, no refrig or hot water. She plans to bring a small cooler with ice for the ice cream; and also ice & beverages: pitchers of water and lemonade (no alcoholic beverages allowed on the premises). She'll also supply all paper plates, bowls, cups, napkins, and
utensils.
We have tables, but only child-size desk chairs...people could bring bigger chairs...also, there's an event at Doty Memorial which could make parking an issue...
Submitted May 23, 2007 at 16:11 From Lois: I talked with Eric this afternoon and the plan is
as follows:
Music will begin at Melody Hill Farm, with Eric Brinkerhof and his wife Pam, my neighbors, about 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. or so. There will be several groups playing. He asked what time the Nips would like to play and I said probably at 3 or 3:30, for half an hour.
At 5 p.m. the group adjourns to the Brinkerhoffs' home on Brook Road near Morse's Mill on the Joe's Brook Road, Danville (or perhaps part of that road is in Barnet--I don't know exactly where the town line is. You probably do.) Better directions will follow.
At Brinkerhoffs: A potluck supper and more music "until people can't stand it any more", Eric says--they have had this sort of party before. People can camp out there for the night , at the Melody Hill Farm buildings near me, on my lawn or at my campsite across from the public beach at Harvey's Lake.
The next day, July 1, I thought we could gather at my campsite for the
annual Hayfield Junket. Most people are familiar with the site and the day's events. It makes sense to have the Junket the day after Eric's party for travelers from other areas.
I'd like to get opinions from the Nips if this is feasible and how many could come to the Melody Hill Farm event---I certainly don't want to play alone. I also want to publicize the date for the Junket soon, before people get tied up with other plans.
Thanks--Lois

Submitted May 17, 2007 at 21:39 Directions to Andy's house: From Montpelier, come north on route 12--or from Worcester and farther north, come south on route 12--to Shady Rill Road. Take Shady Rill to a four-way intersection just before a church. Turn right to cross a bridge and immediately bear left onto Macy Road. Go just over 1 mile and watch for a mailbox with 254 on it. Andy's drive is on the right, across from the mailbox, and slants sharply back and up a gravel drive to a cape. Depending on the weather, Chip's green Subaru wagon or his older blue Honda motorcycle should be parked near the house.

Submitted May 09, 2007 at 17:46 WOW! Thank you, Ron! And now the not-so-good news--I must have a bug in the code for some part of this site, probably the part used for updating your personal page but possibly something else. It messes up some of the data stored for those pages so the NIPs list has one or two names, sometimes repeated in place of everyone else's names. If you've attempted a page update or other work on the site, email me (chiph@rumney.org) with your experiences. Thanks! ~Chip

Submitted Apr 29, 2007 at 22:13 Well, the Woodbury dance seemed slow to start but we definitely had more people dancing more of the time. They all really enjoyed it, including the many elementary students. Didn't seem to draw much from outside the town. Hard for band members to hear each other and we had some confusion about A and B parts, but nothing that took away from anyone's enjoyment except our own. Every musician donated to the fund to help the Burr family, who had a disastrous fire recently. All the Worcester folk really appreciated the gesture from the NIPs.
Submitted Apr 10, 2007 at 09:15 DON'T FORGET -- another Worcester dance on April 28. The publicity is out there -- we just might get a big turnout, but who knows? be ready for anything!
Submitted Mar 07, 2007 at 16:12 Even if nobody ends up hosting music for tonight (Mar. 7), Andy and Janet would be happy to do it next week or any other after that.

Submitted Jan 28, 2007 at 20:07 Lot of water over the dam since the new year started: We've had two great Craftsbury dances and just last night we played the Worcester dance, which had a modest but enthusiastic turnout. Elizabeth's going to analyze the results of some signup sheets she had out to measure interest in more Worcester dances.
Meanwhile, John has raised the notion of a regular semi-open stage event to happen at the Capitol City Grange on certain Saturdays when there isn't a regular Contradance Umbrella dance. There could be a big pickup band and/or defined groups that take turns during the evening. If there were multiple callers, they could alternate too. John's still working on particulars...
Submitted Dec 29, 2006 at 13:36 Elderhostel dances at the Craftsbury Sport Center are now set! The dates are sooner than we thought: Jan. 17, Jan. 24, and Feb. 7. See gig details for directions and map. Worcester dance time is now solid--7:00-9:30 on Jan. 27. Seems like it's either feast or famine...
Submitted Dec 29, 2006 at 10:54 Hello all Champlain Valley (and nearby) residents who like to play New England contra-dance style music. Following the example of NIPS, who have been doing this for years in NorthEastern Vermont, let us gather periodically in our area for music, food and good cheer. This is needed due to the large geographical distance from here to typical NIPS venues. Coupled with the ever-rising cost of transportation and the movement to re-localize, there seems to be a need. Perhaps on occasion we could combine the groups for a session.
For now this new happening is named NIPS-West, until we come up with a better name. The idea is to meet for a potluck supper followed by a music-playing session. Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome and encouraged to suggest tunes. As a start, I suggest we use the "Portland Collection" book as a common pool of tunes, for those who like to have the tunes written down. Proposed dates: first and third
Wednesdays of each month, starting January 17, 2007. Food at 6:30 pm,
music around 7:30 or 8pm. Location TBA: these gatherings rotate among
willing participants' residences.
For more information, please contact Moshe at (802) 879-0876
A Yahoo group has been created for NIPS-West communications, e.g., announcing the location of sessions: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NIPS-West/
Submitted Dec 28, 2006 at 22:24 The calendar is now functional! When you select it from the menu, you get the current month. If you've logged in to the member version of the site, the calendar will display in editable form. Feel free to post a short listing of an event you think NIPs would want to know about. And don't forget the Worcester dance 1/27!
Submitted Dec 27, 2006 at 20:42 Everyone on the NIPs list that has email will find a couple of messages about member access to the site tools. As folks test those tools out and play with different possibilities, our site will be even more fun to visit! Another feature that's finally up and running is the sheet music section, where you can find music to many of the more frequently-played NIPs tunes and where you yourself could upload a music file!
Submitted Dec 22, 2006 at 13:13 Hey, everyone! The Jan. 27 dance in Worcester is on, probably at 7 or 7:30. Elizabeth will work on getting the details nailed down when she gets back around the 27th. If you couldn't make it to Lois's on the 20th, we missed you but here's a glimpse of the gang that was!
Kenric has posted a PDF file of his jig in the sheet music section and we'll try to have a more user-friendly way of getting to it soon. If anyone knows how to get the weather spirits to bring some snow, please do whatever you can, but at least the days will be getting longer for anyone who finds the darkness gets them down. And we can still keep playing music!
Submitted Dec 19, 2006 at 22:18 All better again--for the 2nd time! Fortunately, I was able to extract the data from each person's web page and rebuild the data files that create the NIPs list and allow people to email each other. But I'm still totally bewildered how it happened! I need to see if some briefly-needed script I used to construct everybody's pages with data from the old site got accidentally triggered. If I can find it, I'm going to totally remove it from the site.
Meanwhile, here's a bit more info on founding NIPs member Andy White:
20 years ago, when I started joining the NIPs sessions, we would sometimes go to the little cabin where Andy lived way off behind some farm. Back then, the snow was usually pretty deep for most of the winter and we had to walk a fair distance holding our instruments up high to keep them out of the fluffy stuff. Andy was a very faithful member until he finally accepted a job as the director of maintenance for the Farm and Wilderness Camps. While he was there, he organized a camper string band that has perpetuated itself since then and helped publish a tunebook still used actively there. He also help revitalize the contra dance tradition at the camps.
About 10 years ago, he decided it was time to take a new direction and he left the camps to seek his fortune back in the Midwest. Some of us got the notion he was headed for the Earlham College vicinity for its strong Quaker atmosphere, but that didn't happen. After reconnecting with old friends in the Traverse City, MI area, he took yet another turn and spent three years in the urban setting of Pendle Hill, a Philadelphia-area Quaker study center and religious community.
But he evidently couldn't stay away from Traverse City -- returning yet again, he enrolled in the Great Lakes Maritime Academy for two years of maritime engineering courses for steam and diesel vessels that led to a Coast Guard license as an engineering officer. In the fall of 2004 he worked on a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution research vessel that journeyed to the Gulf of Alaska. He describes it as a small ship that made him seasick on the big waves there! Since then, he has worked on the Great Lakes and now holds a permanent position working as the engineering officer for the huge ore freighters that cross those waters.
Last year Andy fulfilled a long-time dream by buying a house in Travers City, which is getting renovated one space at a time when he is not "at sea" on the great Lakes. No word about whether he still plays the fiddle, but we could write and ask. His address: 253 E. 10th Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
Submitted Dec 19, 2006 at 12:12 ALAS! There's a bug in our system that has made most everything except phone numbers disappear! The same thing happened Nov. 16 and I thought I did it. Well, I brought things back once, so maybe I can do it again. Meanwhile, old-time NIPs may recall founding member Andy White (fiddle). He worked at Farm and Wilderness for a while and then left for the Midwest about 10 years ago. Well, he just sent me a real letter telling me a lot about what he's been up to. The latest is that he's a licensed ship's engineering officer on Great Lakes freighters!
More news later--gotta figure out what's up with our site...
Submitted Dec 14, 2006 at 05:23 Elizabeth is continuing to move ahead with plans for a dance in Worcester. She's going to check out Jan. 27 with Jan. 26 as an alternate date--with the availability of the gym at the Doty School as a question yet to be answered. Meanwhile, Dave B is going to see if he can connect up with the new event coordinator at the Craftsbury Sport Center about dances with George Wilson and David Kaynor. Looks like a Johnson Studio Center dance will not happen this holiday season...

Submitted Oct 25, 2006 at 08:32 Avoid getting lost on the way to Linda's! She's almost exactly 3 miles directly up Minister Brook Road from Rt. 12, no turns but be sure to follow the road as it makes an uphill curve to the right past a side drive that could look like the road continuing straight. Her drive is on the right, marked by a black mailbox with the name Fisher and the number 625 and winds steeply up to a good-sized area for parking by her solar-powered house. In case you get disoriented: her phone is 223-3726.
Submitted Oct 12, 2006 at 15:23 Hi Nips! Here is latest on the Oct.17th short gig. Please note that it is just a bit further uphill - on Minister Brook Road - than the previously announced venue.(i.e.Town Hall) It's like going up to Linda Fisher's, about a mile after Minister Brook Road turns from paved surface into dirt road. Hope you can come - eats should be excellent, as hosts are caterers. (Maybe we can play afterwards at Daphne's just off Minister Brook Road (left at bridge, then first house on right, house furthest in on right.) Best, Pat

Submitted Oct 01, 2006 at 15:53 Report on the Danville green concert: Lois, Dave Hart, Pat, George, Dave B, Ann, John Mallery, and Chip, all bundled up against the cool, blustery conditions, pumped out our standard medleys with lots of gusto after lacing a blue poly tarp across the south bay of the gezebo to cut the wind some. The wooden benches in front of the bandstand collected only rain, not listeners, but there was still lots of applause from whomever was passing by. We may have recruited some newcomers for the Danville dance coming up Friday back in the town hall (after all these years)!
Also: Dear Nipsters -
Peter Peltz called to request that we play for an hour or so at a reception for the two Dem candidates running in the Woodbury, Worcester, Morristown, Elmore District. On Tuesday, October 17, 2006. between 5:30 and 6:30, at Worcester Town Hall. (On the Cabot Road - coming from Maple Corner-just before it meets Route 12 in Worcester.) Food is being served. Hope some of you can play, it will be much appreciated.
Thanks, Pat
Submitted Oct 01, 2006 at 09:49 The gig is definitely on. Lois is organizing tarps we can lash up for protection. We'll try to get them up as quickly as possible so we can set up and tune up. It's in the mid-50s in Danville -- not toasty, but bearable. See you there!
Submitted Sep 30, 2006 at 13:06 Just checked with Lois, who is going to find out more about what to do if the weather is bad. Forecast at this time is 80% chance of rain, could be very gusty. Not the best environment for fiddles or sound equipment. But Lois will try to see if either the church or the town hall will be available for backup. More news as it emerges...

Submitted Sep 14, 2006 at 16:24 NORTHWOODS STEWARDSHIP CENTER DANCE FOR THIS SATURDAY HAS BEEN CANCELLED BY CENTER STAFF DUE TO LACK OF RESERVATIONS. Submitted Aug 16, 2006 at 10:28 Whew! When I submitted a comment about last night's gig in Johnson, a bug in the blog script came up that totally bewildered me! Part of the previously entered text was appearing before the submit button and the rest of the text disppeared when I submitted the new entry. Figured it out--had to do with quotation marks and the need to resubmit the previously entered text so the new stuff would appear above it. Meanwhile, the gig was successful in spite of bugs and threatening clouds. Very diverse crowd of 60-70 people--about half danced, the rest listened from lawn chairs and blankets and applauded. Used $25 of payment to donate to Dance Gypsy.
Submitted Aug 15, 2006 at 12:31 It seems that we have been getting a lot of requests to come play, which, after a long time without a regular dance series, is a nice change. We can assume that the Dance Gypsy is to "blame" for the exposure. Last year I got a request from the DG folks to donate some money to the cause, so it might be a nice gesture for us to donate some proceeds from a gig to support DG.
According the the DG site, the median contribution last year was $25, with donations ranging from $8 to $100. They welcome any amount to be given. So waddya'll think?

Submitted Aug 14, 2006 at 20:16 Well, the Greensboro dances are over, having finally really gotten off the ground for the last two. It was a very pleasant surprise to have John Mallery surface with his keyboard and lend the final dance his resounding style and energy. Lots of people came up to thank us for doing the series and to compliment the musicians.
So Kenric has more details about the North Woods Stewardship Center gig up north--it's a benefit dance (for a percentage of the take) on Sat Sep 16 and includes dinner at 6:00 with the dance to follow -6:30 or so. With the Hardwick gig that Cheryl has listed and the Danville gazebo event in Oct. we're getting a fair amount of exposure...

Hi Chip,
Got a call from my neighbor, Bob Feinberg requesting that the NIPS play at an
open house of the Highland (?) Institute which makes compost in the Hardwick
area. I will be in New York on Sept 22nd so will not be able to play. Could
you give him a call at 586-9984 if you think the NIPS are interested or tell me
on Sunday night in Greensboro if it is not possible for the NIPS to be there.
He wanted to know what the group charges and I told him he'd have to talk to
you. Thanks and see you on Sunday night.

Oh, yeah! Since the calendar isn't set up yet, this is the easiest way to remind everyone that Tuesday, 8/15, we're playing from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at Legion Field in Johnson as part of the Tuesday Night Live series. If you're interested, there's a little moolah in it and the usual chance to be nervous in public...
Watch for details about a mid-September music performance at that conference center up north. And I believe Lois has us slated for a concert on the Danville green the first Sunday in October.
Submitted August 8, 2006 -- This page is a hand-edited mock-up of the new site, so the links on the left either go to the old site or to dummy pages to be replaced by user-updatable ones in the near future. But this gives you an idea of how it might look.
What you're reading is a temporary entry to start what will be a sort of NIPS blog. NIPS members will be able to add to the body of previously contributed material. Contributions could be reports on gigs, questions, answers, whatever. When the interface is finished, it will automatically provide the name of the person who logged on to make the contribution and the date and time. It will also provide a sort of archive for our unfolding history.
Speaking of history, we may have made history last Sunday. The Greensboro dance was either the most-crowded or the second-most crowded we've had. Quite a change from the previous two. And Kenric has pointed out that NIPS has probably passed its 20th birthday sometime this year.
